Athens, GA

Just a quick post for yesterday's activities. Left Amicalola State Park in snow yesterday morning. Yes, I said snow. In Georgia! I know my friends from the Northeast will have absolutely no sympathy, but can I just say I am sick of the cold weather? We are in Georgia, for goodness sake, and it's still under 30 degrees in the evenings. We've been burning the propane on heat every night and waking up to frozen windows. 10 days into this excursion, I really hadn't envisioned still being cold. All right, done bitching.

Anyway, we drove for a few hours yesterday and stopped in Athens, GA to check out the town that the Drive-by-Truckers and a lot of other fine rock and roll bands made infamous. Although the famous 40 Watt club was closed (in fact, they were filming a hip-hop video inside that day), we got out and went over to the club and started up a conversation with the guy sweeping up outside and he let us peak our heads in and take a look. Had a nice conversation about some of the great shows he'd seen over the years there.  Someday we will come back to Athens and see a show here. Also checked out the Georgia Theatre and walked around the University of Georgia Campus. The very hilly campus helped me stretch out all of my "up and down" muscles that were seizing up from the 17 mile hike the day before, but eventually the biting wind and cooler temperatures drove us back to van to get moving again.

Finally, we headed to Macon, GA where we spent the night and celebrated our AT excursion with an all-you-can-eat dinner at Stevie B's Pizza Buffet, a chain (similar to Cici's Pizza, if you're from the South) that has a full salad bar and all you can eat pizza and pasta for $5.99. We were really happy to see salad and had multiple plates before hitting the pizza bar. Tomorrow we are heading further South toward Tallahassee. There must be truly warm weather SOMEWHERE!
